Vance Badawey\u2019s lifelong engagement with the Great Lakes region is reflected in his strong  record of leadership in both public service and private enterprise. A dynamic champion of the  region, Badawey has served at all levels of government \u2013 city councillor, mayor, regional  councillor, and member of parliament. While in public service, Badawey cultivated strong  binational relationships and developed deep expertise on Great Lakes and cross-border issues.  Committed to uniting diverse interests around common goals, Badawey is the ideal leader to  spearhead CGLR\u2019s vision for the future. A proud member of the M\u00e9tis nation, Badawey and his  family live in Port Colborne, Ontario. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Sicard, Board Chair, CGLR <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Sicard is an accomplished executive and board leader with over 20 years of  experience in strategy, marketing and operations in North America and Europe. She currently  serves as Chair of the Board of the Council of the Great Lakes Region, Board Member at Str\u00f8m  Spa Nordique and YPO Qu\u00e9bec. In addition, she acts as a Strategic Advisor to organizations  including AvecPlaisirs Chefs Traiteurs, Management OPS- an affiliate of DRAKKAR and io4  Technologies. Previously, Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne held several senior executive roles at Sodexo, including  Executive Vice President of Operations in Canada and EVP Sales, Marketing, and Strategic  Planning for North America. She is recognized for her expertise in corporate growth,  governance, and stakeholder engagement, with a strong track record of advancing organizations  in complex and competitive markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lora Shrake, Interim Executive Director, CGLR <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lora Shrake joined the Council of the Great Lakes Region in 2021 as the Senior Program  Director, Business and Sustainability and is currently serving as Interim Executive Director.  With over 20 years of experience, Lora has dedicated her career to the environment and  sustainability issues. Her management and leadership spans across non-profit operations,  program management, stakeholder engagement, strategy, and research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to joining CGLR, Lora led a national green building council in the United Arab Emirates  where she oversaw all aspects of the organization\u2019s cross-functional development, including its  impact and reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ABOUT CGLR AND THE GREAT LAKES REGION <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2013 in Toronto, Ontario the Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR) is a  transnational network of charitable and non-charitable organizations working together to  accelerate the transition to a sustainable future in the Great Lakes\u2013St. Lawrence region. Through  cross-border collaboration and innovative partnerships, CGLR strives to create the first  sustainable region in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its inception, CGLR has acted as a catalyst for deepening the Canada \u2013 United States  relationship in the Great Lakes region and basin, with a focus on creating stronger and more  dynamic collaborations to harness the Great Lakes region\u2019s economic strengths and assets,  improve the well-being and prosperity of the region\u2019s people, and protect the environment and  the Great Lakes for future generations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Lakes region <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An economic powerhouse, the Great Lakes region, with a GDP of roughly US$6.0 trillion,  represents the third largest economy in the world \u2013 if it were a country. It is North America\u2019s  industrial engine and the driver of the economic partnership between the Canada and the United  States. Attracting a range of economic activities, major industries provide 1\/3 of the combined  American and Canadian workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guardian of the five Great Lakes, the largest surface freshwater system on the planet, the region  is ecologically significant, supporting diverse ecosystems and over 3500 species of plants, fish  and wildlife, some that are globally rare. The Great Lakes system provides drinking water to  nearly 40 million Americans and Canadians.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The region represents multiple jurisdictions, including 2 Canadian provinces, 8 US states, and  many First Nations and tribes. Over 100 million people call the Great Lakes region home. And  for millennia, the Great Lakes region has been the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Progress Report shows that just 12% of the  SDG goal targets on track. Progress on 50% is weak and insufficient. Worst of all, we  have stalled or gone into reverse on more than 30% of the SDGs.” <\/em>– UN Secretary  General 2023  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through a new strategic plan approved in 2023, CGLR is striving to create the first sustainable  region in the world by becoming a market leader for accelerating the regional transition to a  sustainable future. CGLR will achieve this by convening diverse perspectives and interests to  explore and solve the most pressing socioeconomic and environmental challenge facing  the Great Lakes region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lora Shrake a rejoint le Conseil de la R\u00e9gion des Grands Lacs en 2021 comme Directrice  principale des programmes, Affaires et D\u00e9veloppement Durable. Elle occupe actuellement  le poste de directrice ex\u00e9cutive int\u00e9rimaire. Forte de plus de 20 ans d\u2019exp\u00e9rience, elle a  consacr\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019environnement et aux enjeux de l’\u00e9coresponsabilit\u00e9. V\u00e9ritable puissance \u00e9conomique, la r\u00e9gion des Grands Lacs, avec un PIB d\u2019environ 6 000  milliards $US, repr\u00e9senterait la troisi\u00e8me \u00e9conomie mondiale si elle \u00e9tait un pays. Elle est  le moteur industriel de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord et le pilier du partenariat \u00e9conomique entre le  Canada et les \u00c9tats-Unis. Les grandes industries y attirent une diversit\u00e9 d\u2019activit\u00e9s  \u00e9conomiques et emploient le tiers de la main-d\u2019\u0153uvre combin\u00e9e des deux pays. Gardienne des cinq Grands Lacs, le plus vaste syst\u00e8me d\u2019eau douce de surface de la  plan\u00e8te, la r\u00e9gion rev\u00eat une importance \u00e9cologique mondiale, soutenant une biodiversit\u00e9  exceptionnelle avec plus de 3 500 esp\u00e8ces de plantes, de poissons et de faune, dont  certaines rares \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale. \u00ab Le rapport sur les progr\u00e8s relatifs aux objectifs de d\u00e9veloppement durable (ODD) r\u00e9v\u00e8le  que seulement 12 % des cibles sont en bonne voie. Les progr\u00e8s sont faibles ou insuffisants  pour 50 %. Pire encore, nous avons stagn\u00e9 ou r\u00e9gress\u00e9 sur plus de 30 % des ODD. \u00bb <\/em>\u2013 Secr\u00e9taire g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l\u2019ONU, 2023 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 travers un nouveau plan strat\u00e9gique adopt\u00e9 en 2023, le CGLR vise \u00e0 cr\u00e9er la premi\u00e8re  r\u00e9gion \u00e9coresponsable au monde en devenant un chef de file pour acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer la transition  r\u00e9gionale vers un avenir durable. Le CGLR atteindra cet objectif en r\u00e9unissant diverses  perspectives et int\u00e9r\u00eats afin d\u2019explorer et de r\u00e9soudre les d\u00e9fis socio\u00e9conomiques et  environnementaux les plus pressants de la r\u00e9gion des Grands Lacs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Alors que les relations officielles entre les \u00c9tats-Unis et le Canada traversent des  difficult\u00e9s, le Conseil des Grands Lacs, binational et non partisan, continue de  rassembler Canadiens et Am\u00e9ricains pour faire face aux d\u00e9fis communs. Les  habitants de la r\u00e9gion croient que la collaboration est la meilleure voie vers la  prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9, la protection de l\u2019environnement et la construction de communaut\u00e9s  solidaires. Le nouveau pr\u00e9sident et chef de la direction du CGLR, Vance Badawey, a  \u00e9t\u00e9 choisi parce qu\u2019il incarne ces principes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
